Do you find yourself looking for expensive bras that promise to “add two cup sizes” or give your breasts a fuller appearance? While these undergarments definitely give the appearance of larger, rounder breasts, they’re simply an illusion. If you want to permanently achieve a larger, fuller bust, you may want to explore breast augmentation surgery.

At Premier Cosmetic Surgery & Med Spa in Arcadia, CA, our experienced plastic surgery team provides several kinds of breast augmentation procedures. Whichever method you and your surgeon explore, breast augmentation can create a fuller, rounder bust to enhance your appearance.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure that aims to increase the size of the breasts and give them a more appealing shape. It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world, with more than 200,000 patients receiving breast augmentations in 2020 alone (ASPS).

The following are common reasons that patients seek breast augmentation:

Breast augmentations are especially popular procedures for women who wish to have a more prominent bust or women who have seen a change in the shape of their breasts over time.

Fat Grafting vs. Breast Implants

When it comes to breast augmentation, there are two different ways to increase volume in the breasts: fat transfer or breast implants.

Breast augmentation with fat transfer involves using the patient’s own fat to increase the volume of the breasts. Liposuction is used to harvest fat from other areas of the body, such as the stomach, back, thighs, and upper arms.

This fat is then transferred to the breast to increase the overall size and create a rounder shape.

In contrast, breast augmentation with implants relies on silicone or saline-based implants to add volume to the breast. This is the traditional method of augmentation and a popular choice for many patients. In this procedure, a small incision is made in the breast. The saline or silicone breast implant is then inserted and positioned to create a more voluminous, defined breast.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

The ideal candidate for breast augmentation is someone who wants to enhance their figure by increasing the size and volume of their breasts. In order to opt for breast augmentation with fat transfer, the patient must have excess fat elsewhere on the body. This may be on the stomach, back, thighs, or upper arms.

Patients who do not have enough excess fat for this procedure may instead choose to have augmentation with breast implants.

How Is a Breast Augmentation Performed?

There are several steps that patients can expect to follow during their breast augmentation treatment, starting with a consultation with our talented plastic surgeons.

The Initial Consultation

Your breast augmentation journey will begin with a comprehensive consultation. You will need to meet with the surgeon to determine whether you are a good candidate for breast augmentation. During this appointment, you can discuss whether to pursue fat grafting or to use traditional breast implants.

Your doctor will assess your anatomy and evaluate the treatment options that will best achieve your aesthetic goals. If you’re using traditional implants, the surgeon will also explore your options for silicone or saline implants.

In some cases, you may want to combine breast augmentation with a secondary treatment, such as a breast lift. Your surgeon will assess your overall needs and put together a comprehensive treatment plan with you.

Preparation

Before having breast augmentation, you will need to get medical clearance to ensure you are healthy enough to go under anesthesia. This means that you’ll need to have a full physical and bloodwork performed by your general physician. Your plastic surgeon may order additional diagnostic tests, depending on your circumstances.

To further prepare for your procedure, you should follow a healthy diet, get regular exercise, and remain well hydrated. This will help to prepare your body for the day of surgery and your recovery after.

Surgery

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia in a plastic surgery suite. If you are receiving breast augmentation with fat grafting, your procedure will begin with liposuction.

Fat will be harvested from a predetermined area of the body. Once this excess fat is harvested, it will be transferred to the breasts through discreet incisions in one or more places.

When breast implants are used instead of fat transfer, an incision could be made in a number of ways, depending on your anatomy. Your doctor may place the incision near your areolas, underneath the breast, or in the inframammary fold.

Next, the saline or silicone breast implant will be placed through the incision to add volume to the breast.

Recovery and Results

After your breast augmentation is complete, you will need to remain overnight for observation at a plastic surgery aftercare center before being discharged. Full recovery from breast augmentation with fat grafting can take about four to six weeks. Patients can expect to see the final effects of their procedure after about two months.

Complete recovery from breast augmentation with implants can take about six weeks. Most patients see the final effects of their surgery about two months after the procedure.
