What’s The First Step?

The first step in getting male breast reduction surgery is to schedule an initial consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Arthur Yu. He will discuss your medical history, routine medications, current health conditions as well as your aesthetic goals and expectations. Dr. Yu will then conduct a physical evaluation and make the final determinations for your candidacy for surgery.

If you are a good candidate, Dr. Yu will work with you to arrive at a customized treatment plan that encompasses the procedure needed to achieve the desired chest contour. Once you have this plan, our Patient Coordinator will help you schedule the procedure and provide you with a list of preparatory instructions to follow.

The pre-op instructions are important. For instance, Dr. Yu might ask you to avoid taking any anti-inflammatory drugs for 2 weeks before the procedure and if you smoke, you might be asked to quit 3 weeks before.

What to Expect on the Day of Gynecomastia Surgery

On the day of your Gynecomastia surgery in Arcadia, Dr. Yu and his friendly staff will welcome you, go over your treatment plan to make sure there are no last-minute questions and/or concerns, and then will administer general anesthesia.

Once you are sedated, Dr. Yu will begin the procedure by making the necessary incisions around the male breasts, either under the chest or around the areola. Through these incisions, the doctor will carry out liposuction by inserting a tiny tube, called a cannula, to remove any fat. The fat will be removed through the cannula using high-power suction, like that of a vacuum.

Once the chest has been sculpted to the desired contour, the doctor can remove unwanted glandular breast tissue.

Once the chest contour is achieved, Dr. Yu might need to reposition the areolas to ensure symmetry of the male chest. They will finish by closing any incisions using sutures, and pulling the remaining skin taut.

Finally, a compression garment will be put on you to ensure a more comfortable recovery.

Gynecomastia Recovery

You will be monitored by our team until the anesthesia wears off. You are recommended to have family or a friend drive you to be purely safe. Swelling and bruising are to be expected, so wearing the compression garment strictly will help with that. Dr. Yu will also suggest you walk within twenty-four hours to minimize any chances of blood clots.

Patients will be asked to refrain from their daily routines for the first week after their procedure. More vigorous routines, such as heavy lifting, should be avoided for at least three weeks following the surgery to give the body a considerable amount of time to properly heal.

In time, the swelling will resolve and any visible scarring will fade and flatten out to reveal the new contour of your chest.
