Eyelid Surgery- what

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also known by its medical term blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that can improve the appearance of your eyelids. Surgery can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both, depending on the individual patient’s needs and concerns.

Eyelid surgery is chosen for cosmetic reasons to improve appearance and address functional problems with your eyelids. Eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes. This is a delicate surgical procedure performed by one of our expert, highly trained surgeons.

Types of Eyelid Surgery we offer

Whether you are looking for eyelid surgery to improve your appearance or to address more serious functional issues, the following is a breakdown of the types of surgery we offer. Each patient’s needs differ, and our doctors will help you choose the right procedure for you.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

We provide our Los Angeles area patients with Upper Eyelid Surgery – Also, referred to as upper blepharoplasty, the anti-aging procedure is very common. When we age, there will be more excess skin and more wrinkles appearing in the eyelids. The excessive skin droops and weighs down on the eyes, causing an aged appearance, and in some people, causing blockage of the lymphatic drainage, resulting in a swollen look. Upper eyelid surgery can address this.

Lower Eyelid Surgery (Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty, Eye Bag Surgery)

With aging skin, it is common to see eye bags bulge out. These eye bags become bigger and bigger as the years go by, causing the appearance of tiredness and lack of sleep. Very often, these are accompanied by dark circles and tear troughs, which can make people very self-conscious about their appearance. Lower eyelid surgery can take years off your appearance by addressing these issues.

Upper Eyelid Levator Repair

Aside from cosmetic reasons, some people experience droopy eyelids due to functional or medical issues. This is called Ptosis, and it can affect your vision. It can be congenital or acquired, or it can be neurogenic, myogenic, aponeurotic, mechanical, or traumatic in origin. Some patients also experience levator aponeurosis, an issue that affects the muscle controlling the elevation and function of the upper eyelid. As a result, poor muscle development can lead to eyelid weakness and make the eyes appear smaller or more closed. Surgery to repair the muscle in the upper eyelid can address this issue. It is a very delicate procedure that is performed only if the surgeon deems it necessary.

Dark Circles (Under Eye)

Dark circles can be a source of embarrassment or low confidence in many people as they age. This issue can be caused by deep tear troughs, under-eye pigmentation, dark-colored veins lying too superficial, bad lymphatic drainage, or even diet and hereditary reasons. Our doctors will examine and determine the cause of your dark circles in a consultation to create a treatment plan to address this issue.

Asian Double Eyelid Surgery (Double Crease Surgery)

Statistics show that approximately half of the Asian population does not have crease formation on the upper eyelids (double creases), which can make the eyes appear much smaller. Because of this, double eyelid surgery ranks the highest among all the cosmetic surgery procedures in Asians. Dr. Yu and his surgeons are experts in Asian Double Eyelid Surgery and are proud to provide this option to patients.

Medial Epicanthoplasty

Most Asians have a skin fold that gradually tapers down from the inner part of the upper eyelid, crossing the inner eye corner, and reaching the inner lower eyelid skin for a few millimeters. The “fold” drapes over the inner eye corner in different severities or grades.  While some people wish to keep their ethnicity, others opt to have this fold removed to make the eyes look bigger and more alert. An “inner eye corner” surgery is performed to address the issue of excess skin folds.

Eyelid Surgery- first step

Eyelid Surgery First Step

What’s The First Step?

The first step to booking your Eyelid Surgery appointment is to schedule a consultation with us. During your consultation, Dr. Yu will examine your eyelids, discuss the issues you are concerned with, and design a surgical plan to address those issues. The consultation is also your chance to ask questions about the surgery itself. Dr. Yu is a highly trained surgeon who wants to ensure great results for every patient. Our team will ensure you feel comfortable and satisfied when you make your final decision about eyelid surgery.

Prior to your surgery, Dr. Yu and our team will give you a list of instructions to prepare you for the procedure. This can include avoiding certain medications or fasting.

When you arrive at our clinic for your appointment, we will get you situated and comfortable before the surgery begins.

What to Expect on the day of Eyelid Surgery

The first step will involve administering anesthesia to minimize pain. Dr. Yu will discuss this in your consultation, as it depends on the exact type of Eyelid surgery you are receiving.

Next, Dr. Yu will make the incision on the area of your eyelid that is being addressed. The incision will be made in such a way that the natural crease of the eye will hide any scarring.

Once the incision is made, the fatty deposit and excess skin are removed. Whether you are getting upper, lower, Asian Eyelid surgery, or both, Dr. Yu will focus on the areas discussed during your consultation.

Finally, the incision will be closed with sutures. If no other additional procedures are being performed in the same appointment, you will be taken into a recovery area following the completion of the surgery.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Before you leave our clinic, Dr. Yu will ensure you have all the resources and information you need to aid you through a smoother recovery. We also recommend arranging transportation to and from the clinic, as you will not be able to drive right away.

During the recovery, it is common to experience some mild pain and swelling, or even irritation in the eyelids. You can use a recommended lubricating ointment and cold compresses to help alleviate it.

Dr. Yu will also advise on the right type of medication to manage your pain.

Avoiding the sun is a must during eyelid surgery recovery. You will likely need to take some time off work to recover fully. Reducing time in front of a computer or television is also recommended during recovery. Dr. Yu will advise on when it will be safe to resume regular activities.
